The Howard University Lady Bison basketball team extended their win streak to four games with a 46-33 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders in Newark, N.J., on Jan. 24.
Howard advanced to 11-7 on the season and 5-1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), with a 6-6 mark on the road and 5-1 at home.
The Lady Bison held the Highlanders to single-digits until the 3:11 mark, when NJIT senior guard Rayven Johnson went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, but Howard eventually built a 15-point lead in the first half.
The Highlanders went on a short 5-0 run late in the half, with a three-point basket and a jumper in the paint cutting the Bison lead to 10 at halftime, 27-17.
Howard senior guard Saadia Doyle was unstoppable in the first half, scoring 23 of the team’s 27 total points. In the first 20 minutes, Doyle was 10-of-14 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
As the second-half commenced, it was apparent that NJIT's plan was to shut Doyle down.
With two Highlanders guarding on Doyle at the offensive end, the senior scored just four points.
Howard senior guards Kara Smith and Cheyenne Curley-Payne, along with redshirt junior guard Jerrelle Gorham, utilized the opportunity and collectively scored 15 points. Howard maintained their lead throughout the second half before taking the 46-33 victory.
Doyle attained her seventh double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Smith pulled down a season-best 11 rebounds. Curley-Payne led in assists and steals with five distributions and three takeaways.
As a team, Howard shot 29 percent from the field, 21 percent from beyond the arc and 78 percent from the free-throw line.
Along with the offensive effort, Howard’s defense was in full force, leaving NJIT scoreless for 11 minutes of action and forcing three consecutive shot-clock violations.
Howard will travel for a second matchup against the Lady Pirates of Hampton University on Jan. 28 in Hampton, Va. Hampton had previously defeated Howard 52-50 in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 12.
