Baltimore’s Dunbar Routes Southside, 50-6, in 1A South Playoffs Opener

The Dunbar Poets will advance to the second round of the Maryland State 1A South regional playoffs after easily routing the south Baltimore Southside Academy Jaguars, 50-6, on Nov. 12 at Poly Western High School Field in Baltimore, Md. Dunbar will now prepare for a matchup against Clinton, MD’s Surrattsville High School in the next round of the playoffs scheduled for Nov. 18.

Backed by a stingy defense, the Poets’ offensive unit showed off their balanced attack against Southside, scoring multiple touchdowns passing and running.

Dunbar quarterback William Crest threw a couple of touchdown passes early in the game, but also ran for a 16-yard touchdown near the end of the second quarter to help his team to a 36-6 first-half advantage.

The Poets never slowed down offensively in the second half; Crest came out tossing the ball around the field again, quickly moving the Poets into scoring range. Poets running back Coleman Blackston then pushed the score up to 44-6 after a short touchdown run midway through the third quarter.

Dunbar made it 50-6 not long after as Crest found Keonte Gains for a 20-yard touchdown pass-and-catch in the fourth quarter. The mercy rule was enforced so the game clock didn’t stop in the fourth quarter to help speed up the lopsided contest.

“We did what we had to do get to this point,” said Dunbar coach Lawrence Smith. “We just have to take care of business just like this throughout the rest of the tournament.”

Here are other scores from Baltimore City teams in the Maryland State playoffs this weekend:
- Edmonson Westside beat Dundalk, 22-6, in the 2A North playoffs opener
- Poly beat Perry Hall, 50-21, in the 4A North playoffs opener
