Baltimore’s Dunbar Poets Win Second Consecutive State Championship

The Dunbar Poets captured their second straight Maryland 1A High School Football Championship, their eighth championship in the last decade, as they knocked out Perryville, 32-11, in the state title game on Dec. 3 at M&T Bank Stadium.

Cecil County, Md.’s Perryville proved to be no match for the explosive Dunbar, who poured on 16 points in the last few minutes of the game, turning what was a close contest into an easy victory for the Baltimore City team

Dunbar trailed, 11-8, at halftime after Perryville scored their only touchdown of the game on a long pass at the beginning of the second quarter. Perryville had a chance towards the end of the second quarter to go up by two scores, but was held one-yard short of a touchdown, preserving Dunbar’s chances at a comeback.

Fresh after halftime, Dunbar began to dominate as fullback Charles Brown Jr. broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run, pushing the Poets ahead, 16-11. Dunbar wouldn’t relinquish the lead from that point forward, scoring two more touchdowns late in the fourth quarter to claim the title.

Senior star DeonTay McManus scored a short touchdown run and senior Paki Brown also scored a touchdown run for the Poets to end the game.

“A lot of people doubted us, said we wouldn’t get back to the championship and win it,” Brown said after the game. “But we showed them what Poet Pride is all about, and we’re bringing another title back to the city.”
