The brother of Baltimore Ravens receiver Torrey Smith died in the early morning hours of Sept. 23 following a motorcycle crash in Virginia, the team announced.
Tevin Chris Jones, 19, died following a crash in West Moreland County, Virginia, the team said in a statement. Smith was informed of his brother’s death at approximately 1 a.m., and immediately left the team to be with his family, the Ravens said.
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said he met with Smith before he left to join his family.
“This is devastatingly sad, sad news,” Harbaugh said in a statement. “Torrey and his family are a close, special family, and our hearts and thoughts reach out to all of them. Our hearts ache today. We pray for Tevin, his mother, Torrey and the rest of the family. God bless Tevin.”
Harbaugh said it was unclear whether Smith would play with in the Ravens’ Sunday night matchup against the New England Patriots.
“Torrey's priority is his family,” Harbaugh stated. “We understand that completely."
Smith is one of seven children of his mother, Monica Chante Jenkins.
