Newton Outduels Griffin as Panthers Top Redskins

Last year's rookie sensation outdid this year's version as the Carolina Panthers knocked off the Washington Redskins, 21-13, at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. on Nov 4.

After bursting onto the scene as a rookie quarterback, Carolina's Cam Newton has experienced a sophomore slump in a year that's seen the Panthers drop a series of disappointing games. Newton has been at the forefront of every postgame interview, questioning himself and his team.

Washington (3-6) was picked by many to easily defeat the struggling Panthers, but simply couldn't get anything going as Newton led Carolina to a 14-3 halftime lead. Behind Newton's 238 total yards and two touchdowns, Carolina (2-5) shocked the Redskins and snapped a five-game losing streak.

Griffin, this year's rookie star, was held largely in check, compiling 268 yards and no scores. Griffin's receivers had bad flashbacks as they dropped numerous passes yet again, similar to their 10-drop performance a week earlier against Pittsburgh. Several of Griffin's passes either bounced off receivers' hands or slipped through fingertips, and Washington didn't score a touchdown until there was just 1:28 in the game.

Despite the loss, Washington continued its dominance on the ground, rushing for 151 yards. The Redskins rank second in the league with 166 rushing yards per game.

Washington will return to FedEx Field on Nov. 11 to square off with the Philadelphia Eagles at 1:00 p.m.
