African American athletes, including several from Baltimore, are among the top 34 earners on the Forbes list of the world’s 100 highest paid athletes.
The magazine’s annual list compiles the athletes’ earnings from salary or winnings and endorsements since last June. The list does not include agent fees, taxes or investment gains or losses.
At the top of the list is golf’s Tiger Woods who earned just over $78 million from $13.1 million in tournament prizes and $65 million in endorsements.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant is the highest earner among pro basketball players at number three with $61.9 million from $27.9 million in salary and $34 million in endorsements.
National Basketball Association (NBA) superstar LeBron James is number four with $59.8 million in earnings from $17 million in salary and $42 million in endorsements.
Although he spent the just-concluding 2012-13 season recovering from a knee injury, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, ranked number 12, made $16.1 million in salary and $21 million from endorsements.
Boxer Floyd Mayweather slid to number 15 from the number one spot in 2012 with no endorsement earnings, according to the magazine, and $34 million from a single bout in the last year. His next fight is scheduled for Sept. 14.
NBA forward Kevin Durant is number 17 with $16.9 million in salary and $14 in endorsements.
Miami Heat guard Dwayne Wade came in at number 23 with $17.4 million in salary and $11.5 million in endorsements.
With a $3 million edge in endorsements, Wade came in just ahead of Baltimore schoolboy star Carmelo Anthony. The New York Knick came in at number 25 with $19.5 million in salary and $8.5 million in endorsements.
Lakers center Dwight Howard is number 29 with $19.5 million in salary and $7 million in endorsements.
Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice ranked 34 as the highest paid African American on a Baltimore team with $24.2 million in salary and $1.6 million in endorsements.
Serena Williams was number 68 with $8.5 million in winnings and $12 million in endorsements.
