The Hampton University men’s basketball team claimed their first win of the season in their home opener, defeating Howard University, 58-50, in front of more than 4,000 fans on Dec. 1 at the HU Convocation Center.
Freshman guard Deron Powers of Williamsburg, Va. led all scorers with a career-high 22 points. Also scoring in double figures for Hampton was senior guard Jasper Williams, a Washington, D.C. native, who finished the game with a season-high 13 points.
Senior guard Calvin Thompson led Howard with 18 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Mike Phillips added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Hampton (1-6 overall, 1-0 MEAC) shot 32.1 percent (18-for-56) from the floor and 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from the free throw line. Hampton also hit nine of their 25 three-point shots.
Howard held a 43-32 in rebounds, but turned the ball over 25 times, resulting in 21 Hampton points.
Howard (1-7 overall, 0-1 MEAC) shot just 30.4 percent (14-for-46) from the floor and missed all eight of their three-pointers.
Howard returns to action on Dec. 4 when it faces American University at home. Hampton will face Robert Morris at the Hampton University Convocation Center on Dec. 7.
