Ordered to Jail

Last Updated Aug 2008

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick

A judge ordered embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to jail for failing to notify the court of his trip to Canada and violating the terms of his bond, according to WDIV-TV in Detroit.

Despite Kilpatrick's apology, Circuit Court Judge Ronald Giles said he needed to treat Kilpatrick as an ordinary citizen and reportedly sent him immediately to jail. Giles revoked Kilpatrick’s bond and suspended all travel.

The Michigan Chronicle had reported last week that Kilpatrick was forced to post a $7,500 bond, his personal travel privileges suspended and ordered to take a drug test after allegedly assaulting a Wayne County deputy sheriff who was serving a subpoena at the mayor’s sister’s house in connection with the criminal case against Kilpatrick.

According to the Chronicle, an irate Kilpatrick was also on the premises and physically threw the deputy sheriff off the porch causing him to injure his hip, the deputy testified. Meanwhile, the Detroit City Council voted to continue its efforts to have the mayor removed from office.
