As a 68-year-old African American woman, the fact that Barack Obama could be the first African American to become president of the United States has enabled me to begin a healing process to cure the trauma I have encountered in my lifetime. It also gives me hope for all of my grandchildren, especially for my biracial grandchildren who, like Obama, can be proud of their African American as well as their Caucasian heritage.
Confronting “bigotry” remains a challenge, but I have observed a change in attitude in Calvert County. I also observed this attitude change in the 84,000 people that I was among at the Democratic Convention in Denver. I believe that my perception of change is real.
