(December 2, 2008) - No. 14 ranked West Lake barely advanced to the Maryland 3A Championship last week, but it barely did so after escaping with a 24-21 victory over Seneca Valley in overtime.
Place kicker Nick Koster did the honors of scoring the game-winning field goal, but that came after West Lake’s defense stopped Seneca Valley on its first four attempts at scoring in the extra period.
West Lake (11-2) wasted no time sending in Koster to kick the game winner, sending him in on first down of their first possession.
“I wasn't expecting to be out there at all,” Koster told the media shortly after the game. “I thought we were going to go for it and try to score, probably by running, but [we] decided to go for the field goal and just end it.”
Koster probably thought his team would run for the score because West Lake tailback Devon Smith had scored all of the team’s points up to that point, as he rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries.
West Lake will now face on No. 12 Wilde Lake (12-1) on Thursday at M&T Bank Stadium in the Maryland 3A championship game.
