(April 28, 2009) - Most youths can only fantasize about playing on a Major League Baseball field, but Dunbar Senior High School’s baseball squad was able to turn that fantasy into a reality on Monday after holding team practice at Nationals Park.
The Washington Nationals invited Dunbar to Nationals Park as part of their 2009 D.C. Public High School Initiative, in which all public schools in the District with a baseball team were invited to hold a two-hour practice at the relatively new stadium. In addition, the city’s public high schools were invited to select one game from a list of available dates to be billed as their night at Nationals Park.
The team had a real Major League experience, taking batting practice and field drills on the Nationals’ fresh green lawn.
The Nationals’ D.C. Public High School Initiative hopes to boost African-American youths’ interest in professional baseball.
