(June 28, 2009) - The first trip by a U.S. team to a FIFA final match started well enough.
But world powerhouse Brazil overcame the Americans’ early two-goal lead, scoring three times in the second half to sweep past the U.S., 3-2, in the Confederations Cup final Sunday.
A header by Brazil’s Lucio in the 83rd minute past American keeper Tim Howard capped a furious rally to give Brazil another world title.
The U.S. got off to a fast start, jumping to a 2-0 lead with scores by Clint Dempsey in the ninth minute and Landon Donovan in the 26th minute.
But Brazil put pressure on the U.S. before the half, and cut into their lead with a 46th minute goal by Luis Fabiano. Fabiano struck again in the 73rd minute to tie the game.
“We’re disappointed,” U.S. striker Landon Donovan said. “To give up two goals like that so fast in the second half hurts.”
