(July 1, 2009) - Summer is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather is warm, the sun is out and there are plenty of things to get into. From outdoor concerts, to carnivals to rooftop pools; summer is the best time to take advantage of all of the cool activities the District has to offer.
Last week, the biggest event was undoubtedly the Beyonce I Am…Sasha Fierce tour , which took over the Verizon Center. With an almost sold-out arena, Beyonce performed hits like "Single Ladies," "Irreplaceable" and "Diva." The women of America’s first family even enjoyed the show as Malia and Sasha Obama were escorted by first lady Michelle Obama, first grandma Marian Robinson and President Obama’s senior advisor Valerie Jarrett.
Celebrities also took advantage of the weather last week when athletes like Vernon Davis and Mike Beasley, along with models Melyssa Ford, and Dolicia Bryant, hosted the second annual Rooftop Party. Other celebs like R&B singer Raheem DeVaughn and “Flavor of Love's” Autumn Joi showed up to mingle with D.C.'s socialites and guests.
Other cool outdoor events you may have missed were the D.C. Caribbean Carnival this past weekend, which celebrated the music, art, dance and food of the West Indies. Even Mayor Adrian Fenty supported this Georgia Avenue Summer mainstay. Souljah Boy also performed at Six Flag's outdoor pavilion in Largo, Md.
Of course, the nightlife scene stayed busy. Washington Redskin Clinton Portis was spotted at D.C.’s favorite Monday night party at Fly Lounge. Def Jam's newest R&B singer Jeremiah performed his latest single ” Birthday Sex” at Eyebar last Tuesday. R&B singer Mario, a native of Baltimore, hit up Josephine Lounge on Wednesday night and “America's Next Top Model” winner Jaslene Gonzalez stopped by The Park at Fourteenth on Thursday.
The good news is that you haven't missed all of the fun. This weekend provides most Americans with a long July 4 holiday weekend. Check out Washington's Patriotic Pool Party at the Skyline Pool at the Capitol Skyline Hotel (10 I St. S.W.) on July 3 from 12- 8 p.m. If you don't want to get your hair wet, listen to the soulful sounds of R&B singer Mario who will be performing at Club 24 (2122 24th Place N.E.) on July 4.
