(August 15, 2009) - The dog days of summer have finally reached the District with temperatures reaching the 90s and the humidity taking a toll on everything outdoors. While the weather does make it difficult to maintain your "fabulousness," don't fret; D.C. is still retaining it's shine through the August heat.
Last week, the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity took over the District, in town for their week-long meeting, the 79th Conclave. While they weren't working on official fraternity business, the crimson and creme brothers were spotted around town at many major events hosted in their honor. Kwame Jackson, a losing contestant on The Apprentice and also a member of the fraternity, hosted an event at K Street Lounge to promote his latest business venture, Krimson by Kwame, a necktie collection. Being sold in Macy's stores nationwide, Jackson plans to donate a percentage of his proceeds to his brotherhood.
Still, there were a lot of other great events in the District besides the conclave. Comedian Kevin Hart and BET television personality Alesha Renee hosted a party at The Park at Fourteenth, a swanky lounge in McPherson Square. Also seen partying inside The Park were R&B girl group Rich Girls along with singer Raheem DeVaughn, who did an impromptu performance of his hit song, "Woman." Model Eva Pigford was also spotted on this lounge's comfortable couches.
Great summer tours hit the nation's capital last week. The most anticipated hip-hop tour, the "America's Most Wanted Tour" featuring Lil’ Wayne, Young Money, Young Jeezy and Nicki Minaj hit the Nissan Pavilion. Headlining act Young Jeezy disappointed fans when he showed up extremely late. Rumor has it that Young Jeezy got into an argument with his limousine driver on the way to the venue, causing the rap superstar to be late.
Also, people from around the metropolitan area flocked to the Merriweather Post Pavilion to hear soulful songstress Erykah Badu perform along with Chrisette Michele, go go legend Chuck Brown and crooner Raphael Saadiq.
The "Hangover Tour," featuring Asher Roth and Kid Cudi went down at the 9:30 Club. Fans were delighted when Asher Roth came rolling out on stage in a mini-escalade. WKYS' "Russ Buss Tour" also brought entertainers to D.C.'s Warner Theatre. Acts such as R&B singers Mario and Bobby Valentino wooed many screaming fans.
Even former disco queen, Gloria Gaynor was spotted on Capitol Hill. Gaynor sung “I Will Survive” during a hearing on the Performance Rights Act where Sen. Al Franken participated as well.
Spotted hanging around town was “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard, who sported a green sweatsuit and Louis Vuitton bag in Georgetown. Also, comedian-actor Martin Lawrence was spotted showing love to some lucky fans at a Giant grocery store in Virginia, where apparently he owns a summer home. Also, rappers Fat Joe and Hurricane Chris were spotted partying in Lux Lounge along with NBA newcomer Rudy Gay.
If you're trying to cool off this weekend, why not try a rooftop party. This Sunday, the Capitol Skyline Hotel Pool (10 I St. S.W.D.C., is hosting "Spike'd Sundays", a weekly pool party hosted by Top Chef’s Spike Mendelsohn. For $10 enjoy the pool, a free burger (yes, they will have veggie burgers) and discounted cocktails and beer.
