(September 6, 2009) - A White Georgia man was arrested this week after police said he repeatedly slapped a stranger’s Black toddler to stop it from crying.
After growing tired of listening to the upset 2-year-old cry while shopping at a Wal-Mart, Roger Stevens, 61, told the child’s mother, “if you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you.”
When the child continued to cry, Stevens took matters into his own hands, slapping the child several times across the face, according to a police report. The man then told Mathews, “See, I told you I would shut her up,” according to the report.
Stevens was arrested and charged with a felony count of cruelty to children. The child sustained redness to her face, but was not otherwise hurt. No civil charges have yet been filed against Stevens.
Speculations of race playing a role in Stevens’ actions are circulating within the Black community as news of the incident has spread across the state and nationally.
