(October 25, 2009) - Rainy weather didn’t stop the Dunbar Poets from moving one step closer to claiming the Baltimore City title with a 6-0 win over the Edmonson-Westside Red Storm at BCPSS Complex Field on Oct. 23.

It was the sixth straight win for the Poets, who advanced to 7-1 this season. Dunbar didn’t produce as many yards and points as usual due to the slippery field, but they made just enough plays to pull out the victory.

“It doesn’t matter if we win 50-0 or 6-0,” Dunbar coach Ben Eaton said. “The only thing that matters is learning from the game, applying what you learned and moving forward.”

Edmondson-Westside’s defense did a decent job containing the rushing attack of Dunbar throughout the first three quarters of the game, but Dunbar eventually made the proper adjustments.

The only scoring drive of the game came at the top of the fourth quarter when Dunbar quarterback Evan Pittman made two big passes down the field, including a 30-yard toss to receiver Chris Robinson. The Edmondson-Westside secondary was caught off guard by the deep passes and was called for a pass interference penalty on fourth-and-two.

Realizing Dunbar could hurt them with the pass, Edmondson-Westside backed up off the line, which opened running lanes for Dunbar tailback Nathan Ayers to score on a touchdown run.

“All game they were delay-blitzing, looking to stop our screens and the run, so we had to be patient,” Pittman told the AFRO. “But we put them on their heels with a few passes, and that’s thanks to the great blocking from our offensive line and my two tight-ends.”

Dunbar will now prepare to face their toughest opponent of the season on Oct. 30 as they matchup against the Poly Engineers, who clobbered Northwestern High School, 32-0, on Oct. 23.

“This is the moment we’ve been waiting for all season,” Pittman told the AFRO. “We want the City title, and the only team in the way is Poly. It’s time to take care of business and move forward.”
