(October 18, 2008) -- Levi Stubbs, the soulful lead singer of the Four Tops, died yesterday. He was 72 and had complications from a stroke.
Four Tops "Ask The Lonely" Remix Tribute:
According to the Associated Press, the Motown legend passed away at his Detroit home while he was asleep. In the past, Stubbs suffered from various heath issues, including stroke and cancer, which led the crooner to stop touring in 2000.
Stubbs’ distinctive voice helped spring such popular hits as ‘I Can’t Help Myself,’ ‘Ain’t No Woman’ and ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There.’
Stubbs was one of the orignial members of the Four Tops, which formed in 1953. A decade later, they signed with Motown Records and became responsible for setting a high quality and standard for contemporary soul in the mid-60s, with synchronized dance steps and signature harmonies.

Levi Stubbles II was born June 6, 1936 in Detroit, one of eight children of a foundry worker and a housewife. He later shortened his surname. Stubbs’ cousin, singer Jackie Wilson, helped pave the group’s way in the music business. Also, one of Stubbs’ brothers, Joe, sang with the Contours and the Falcons.
