(April 26, 2009) - While the facts surrounding the kidnapping and rescue of the Maersk Alabama Captain Richard Phillips have been widely reported, less well-known is that ship which saved him was commanded by a black woman, Rear Admiral Michelle Howard.

Howard received the assignment of leading the U.S. Navy's counter-piracy task force just three days before the Maersk Alabama was attacked by Somalia pirates.

“It’s probably one of the most exciting missions the Navy has been on in for a long while,” Howard told the Navy Times.

Howard is the first of her 1982 U.S. Naval Academy class to reach the rank of admiral. In 1999, Howard became the first African-American woman to command a U.S. Navy ship, the USS Rushmore.

She holds a masters degree in Military Science Arts and Sciences from the Army’s Command and General Staff College.

Howard said the mission of her unit, Combined Task Force 151, will remain deterring and disrupting piracy off the Horn of Africa.

“Right now, the policy is, fight piracy, and I am all about that policy,” she told the Navy Times. “We are quite capable of staying out here and doing this mission.”

Howard’s task force operates with U.S. warships deployed to the eastern Africa area as well as those sent from allied nations. Before her assignment to the strike group, Howard was the senior military assistant to the Secretary of the Navy.

Asmiral Howard did the mission she was trained and sworn to do. Everything is not always about black or white. I admire Admiral Howard for integerity and humality of not making a fuss about not being mentioned in the news. I know as a people we have never been given our accolades, but this is a new day dawning and we shoul let Jim Crow rest in peace. Admiral Howard is someone I can look up to who do a job and have peace and satisfaction in knowing she accomplished her mission. Way to go Admiral.

In the words of someone, whose name I can't remember, "you can train a dog to dance, but it ain't natural" That kinda sums up my views on women admirals. Sorry.

Would the commander of the force been mentioned if it was a white male - probably not. The story was about the abducted Maersk captain... She seems like a great person - an inspiration to all - but doubt she was left out due to race or gender. It's actually racist emphasize her accomplishments due to her race or gender (that assumes people would be surprised...)

This reporting by The Afro-American is just the kind of thing that Judge was referring to when she made the comment that seems to have gotten so many people riled up. No other outlet let us know that a black woman Admiral was in the overall command of the ships that were involved in the rescue. I was not aware that a black woman had such high profile {Thanks Afro)!! ED H; You are right, Admirals do not command ships. For those who don't know, the Admiral is in charge of many U S Navy ships and some U S Marine ground forces. Joyce B; I assume you are not fully aware of U S Navy structure. The Admiral is not Admiral of the Navy. That would be five stars and is only used as the very top (uniformed)U S Navy position during a 'declared' wartime position. She IS an Admiral IN the the U S Navy. As best I could tell from the picture, she has two stars (Rear Admiral).

Yahoo News reports that a movie deal is in the works for Captain Philips' story. While it may not be a big deal whether Admiral Howard's race is reported in the news, I will be highly offended if she morphs into a white male for the sake of Hollywood.
