We revisit the tragic death of Kalief Browder, who spent more than 1,100 days at the infamous Rikers Island in New York, for allegedly stealing a backpack. But, he was actually incarcerated for that length of time because he was too poor to make bail. We examine Browder’s case, which is the subject of a new documentary with Brittany Oliver, police accountability coordinator for the ACLU of Maryland. Also, Dayvon Love of Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle gives an update on the battle for bail reform in Maryland.
