Edwards Announces Her Guest for State of the Union Address
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) today announced that her guest for this evening’s State of the Union address will be Maryland Speaker Pro Tem Adrienne Jones (District-10).  Speaker Pro Tem Jones has been a member of the Maryland House of Delegates since 1997.  She is one of only six women serving as Speaker Pro Tem and is the only African American serving currently as Speaker Pro Tem in the United States. Speaker Pro Tem Jones is the first African American woman to serve in this capacity in Maryland’s history (full bio attached).
“As the first African American woman to serve in Congress in Maryland, I am proud Maryland Speaker Pro Tem Adrienne Jones is my guest for President Obama’s historic and final State of the Union address as this nation’s first African American President.  Working in Baltimore and Annapolis, Speaker Pro Tem Jones has worked tirelessly to strengthen her community and improve the lives of the constituents she represents and the lives of all Marylanders.  We share a passion for service, and throughout her nearly four-decade civil service career, she remains a trailblazer for African American women in our state and around the country. I truly admire her leadership. I look forward to Speaker Pro Tem Jones joining me for tonight’s historic address.”
