TODAY: Cardin in Anne Arundel Co. to Discuss Overcoming Challenges to Veterans’, Business Success

TODAY, Friday, November 17, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin will participate in three events in Anne Arundel County, Md., that explore the challenges faced by local military veterans and business leaders, along with their connections to the federal policy debate.

The events come only a week before the 8th annual Small Business Saturday, which encourages people to #ShopLocal and support community-based businesses. Senator Cardin, a senior member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, has cosponsored a Senate Resolution celebrating Small Business Saturday since it was established.

Friday, November 17 at 10:30 AMSenator Cardin will host a discussion with members of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce on the many issues being debated at the federal level that affect Maryland business success.  The senator and the leaders of a diverse range of businesses will consider the implications of recent developments on Capitol Hill regarding health care, tax reform, immigration policy and other issues. Senator Cardin, the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, also will exchange perspectives with participants on international markets and relations – and their implications for Maryland companies.

Friday, November 17 at 1:00 PMSenator Cardin will lead a roundtable conversation with Military Corps Career Connect (C3) focused on developing employment opportunities for transitioning service members, active duty spouses and recently separated veterans. The senator will learn more about the accomplishments of C3, funded by a $4.3 million U.S. Department of Labor, National Dislocated Worker Grant, in which participants work directly with a C3 Veteran Navigator to receive career planning, coaching and preparation. The senator also will hear from current and past program participants to learn more about the hurdles the program has helped them to overcome.

Friday, November 17 at 2:15 PM, Senator Cardin will visit Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to spotlight the early success of LaunchPad, a pilot program that the airport and Fraport USA, the manager of the facility’s retail concessions, launched this year to help local entrepreneurs jump-start businesses and grow into permanent retailers. Senator Cardin will meet with program sponsors and micro-business owners to hear more about the program’s unique approach to supporting and developing the entrepreneurial spirit.
