BALTIMORE (Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) crews are working as safely and as quickly as possibly to ensure public safety and restore customers who lost power this evening as a result of the winter storm that brought wet snow throughout its central Maryland service area. As freezing rain is expected to continue throughout the night, the company is prepared for new outages to occur throughout the evening and early morning as trees and tree limbs, weakened by the snow and coated with ice, may come down onto power lines and add to the damage. The company reminds customers to report power outages and downed wires to BGE at 877.778.2222. Customers are also able to report power outages from mobile phones and devices through the mobile website at bge.com. ) –
“BGE crews continue to work safely and as quickly as possible to restore service to our customers who have been affected by today’s winter weather storm,” said Carol Dodson, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “Throughout this process, it’s vitally important that customers report power outages and downed wires by calling 877.778.2222 or from mobile phones and devices through the company mobile website at bge.com. As freezing rain is forecasted to continue to affect our service area overnight, coating trees and tree limbs with ice, customers may experience new outages throughout the evening and into early morning. The snow and ice have created hazardous road conditions, which may delay the arrival of our crews to damage locations. The safety of our employees and our customers is our top priority, and we appreciate our customer’s patience as we work around-the-clock to restore service.”
Customers should visit BGE’s online Storm Center for important information on how to stay safe during and after a storm. As a reminder, BGE customers who may be elderly, disabled or dependent on electricity for medical equipment (Customers with Special Needs), should always have alternate arrangements in place should they experience an extended power outage. Restoration updates can be found on BGE’s enhanced power outage map, which is available through the mobile and full websites and provides the general location and status of current electric power outages in BGE’s service area. Customers can view affected area(s), the number of customers affected by an outage, estimated time of restoration, if available, and the status of the field crew assigned to repair the issue. Customers can also stay informed by visiting BGE’s social media sites Twitter and Facebook.
BGE's restoration priorities are public safety issues and critical facilities such as 911 centers, hospitals and water/sewage treatment centers. Then restoration is generally scheduled so that the greatest number of customers can be restored as quickly and as safely as possible.
To help prevent outside meters and attached equipment, including vent pipes, from malfunctioning and possibly interfering with service, BGE encourages customers to try to safely clean these devices with a broom or brush to keep them clear of snow and ice buildup. It is also important to clear ice and snow from outside pipes which provide ventilation for direct-vent furnaces and water heaters. Always keep dryer vents clean from lint build-up and clear of snow and ice. Customers with electric heat pumps should also clear snow and ice away from the heat pump to allow the unit to function properly.
