BALTIMORE, Md. (September 15, 2011) – TOMORROW, Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown will join Senator Ben Cardin, Councilman William “Pete” Welch and other Baltimore City officials to welcome attendees to the 2011 Maryland Women Veteran’s Conference Women Veterans: Empowered with the Tools for Success, sponsored by the National Center for Health Behavioral Change, A Step Forward, Incorporated, and AARP.
Throughout the day the conference will host workshops and panel discussions on Finances/Budgeting: “What Women Veterans Need to Know”, Entrepreneurship, GI Benefits for Education, Health Care Benefits, Job Opportunities, and Life Skills Techniques. There will also be health care screenings, a college fair, massages, yoga workshops, vendors and entertainment. Over 400 veterans, professionals, active duty service members, veteran advocates, family and friends of veterans and veteran-service agencies are expected to attend. Organizers are hoping to identify women veterans throughout Maryland, assess unmet needs, identify barriers to service and establish an ongoing continuum of care for women veterans.
Lt. Governor Brown, a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and the nation’s highest-ranking elected official to have served a tour of duty in Iraq, leads the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s efforts to provide Veterans with better services and resources. Since taking office in 2007, Lt. Governor Brown has championed successful efforts to pass the Veterans Behavioral Health Act that expanded services to veterans in rural parts of the state, protect veterans business loans programs and fully fund the Iraq and Afghanistan Scholarship Program. Earlier this year, the Lt. Governor launched the Mil2FedsJobs web portal, located on the Maryland Workforce Exchange (MWEjobs.maryland.gov), the first of its kind in any state to directly match transitioning servicemembers with careers in the Federal Government.
