ANNAPOLIS, Md. (February 27, 2012) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will testify this week in support of the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s Health Improvement and Disparities Reduction Act of 2012 (SB 234/HB 439). Brown is scheduled to appear before the House Health & Government Operations Committee tomorrow, Tuesday, and before the Senate Finance and Budget & Taxation Committees on Wednesday.
The Maryland Health Improvement and Disparities Reduction Act establishes an innovative pilot program of Health Enterprise Zones (HEZs) in order to address health disparities among Maryland’s racial and ethnic groups and geographic areas, improve health care access and health outcomes in underserved communities, and reduce health care costs. The proposal for HEZs resulted from recommendations made by the Maryland Health Quality and Cost Council’s Health Disparities Workgroup <http://www.governor.maryland.gov/ltgovernor/pressreleases/120117.asp> , which was established by Lt. Governor Brown and led by Dean E. Albert Reece of the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Lt. Governor Brown leads the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s health care portfolio. Under the leadership of Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown, Maryland has implemented reforms that have expanded health coverage to over 310,000 Marylanders and put the State in position to maximize the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA).
