Baltimore Gas and Electric Company to Deploy Underground Electric Crews to New York City to Assist with Hurricane Sandy Recovery
Overhead Linemen and Support Staff Complete Restoration Work in Support of Sister Utility PECO in Philadelphia – Now head to New York State in Support of Long Island Power Authority’s Restoration Effort
More than 300 Electric and Natural Gas Specialists and Support Staff Continue to Aid Restoration Work throughout the Northeast
BALTIMORE, Nov. 8, 2012 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) <http://www.bge.com/Pages/default.aspx> today announced that it continues to support restoration efforts in the Northeast with the latest deployment of a team of underground line personnel to New York City to assist ConEdison with its efforts throughout Manhattan and in the Queens borough. The team of more than 20 underground line specialists will depart early Friday morning.
Beginning last Saturday, BGE has deployed more than 300 overhead electric, underground electric, natural gas technicians, contractors and support staff to assist with restoration efforts. Specifically, overhead linemen have been working along-side their counterparts from BGE’s sister utility, PECO, assisting with restoration activities in the Philadelphia suburbs. These crews and their vehicles, including a mobile command center, will now begin to transition from work in Pennsylvania to Long Island Power Authority in New York where customers still remain without power. Additionally, a team of 12 BGE natural gas mechanics deployed early this past Monday to assist New Jersey Natural Gas with restoring natural gas to its customers also left without service in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. In total, BGE crews and contractors have or will be assisting six utility companies in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.
“BGE continues to deploy additional resources to utilities throughout the northeast as they continue their work to restore service to customers affected by both Hurricane Sandy and yesterday’s Nor’easter,” said Stephen J. Woerner, senior vice president and chief operating officer for BGE. “Key to any restoration effort, particularly one of this scale, is the industry’s mutual assistance network. Just as many utilities and contractors from around the nation answered our call for assistance here in Central Maryland prior to and during Hurricane Sandy, BGE is lending its support to northeastern utilities which continue to work around the clock to restore electric and natural gas service to their customers.”
BGE is an active participant in a mutual assistance network of utilities and stands ready to assist when its service is requested, so long as it does not negatively affect service to its central Maryland customers. All costs associated with responding to mutual assistance requests are the responsibility of the requesting utility.
