BGE Continues Operation Pipeline Natural Gas Main Upgrades in 2013

Five neighborhood projects added to program that proactively replaces community gas mains to improve safety and reliability

BALTIMORE (April 2, 2013) – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) <http://www.bge.com/Pages/default.aspx>  announced today that it will be initiating five new natural gas main upgrade projects in 2013 throughOperation Pipeline <http://www.bge.com/operationpipeline> , a multi-year program to replace hundreds of miles of cast iron and bare steel gas pipes with modern pipes. The new projects will be located in Arbutus, Graceland Park and Howard Park. BGE will also begin new phases of projects in Catonsville and Glen Burnie, communities where related Operation Pipeline projects have previously been initiated.      
 
“Through Operation Pipeline, BGE is making an investment to upgrade gas equipment that is approaching the end of useful service,” said Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “This program is part of BGE’s continuing commitment to providing safe and reliable energy systems, and by taking this  proactive approach, customers benefit from a more efficient and cost-effective way to maintain infrastructure.”
 
In addition to the five new projects beginning this year, Operation Pipeline has initiated 24 upgrade projects throughout the central Maryland region since 2010 when the program began. Nearly 40 miles of cast iron or bare steel pipelines have been retired since the program’s inception.
