CARDIN HOSTS GREEN ENERGY SMALL BUSINESSES TO TALK
BUDGET AND SEQUESTRATION
On Friday, April 19 at 1:00pm, as a preview of Earth Day 2013, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee and the Environment and Public Works Committee, will host a roundtable for “green” or environmentally focused small businesses. They primarily engage in construction, green energy, and remediation. Most of the businesses represented are registered with the Small Businesses to provide services to the federal government. Senator Cardin will discuss his efforts to reverse sequestration and hear how Maryland these environmentally aware small businesses are preparing for and dealing with budget cuts.
According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses received $91 billion in prime federal contracts in 2011, or just less than 22 percent of the total contracts available to small companies. The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has estimated that sequestration could result in cuts to procurement budgets of more than $49 billion over 10 years. Such cuts could result in a loss of more than 282,400 jobs nationwide among suppliers and vendors who depend on DOD primary contractors.
