The Bowie State University (BSU) Bulldogs racked up nearly 500 yards of offense in a 42-28 victory over Saint Anselm College on Sept. 7 in Manchester, N.H.

In their season opener, the Bulldogs offense couldn’t be stopped, scoring 21 points in the first half, another 21 points in the second half, and a crucial 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Saint Anselm kept pace through the first three quarters, and the score was tied 28-28 at the end of the third quarter. But Bowie State scored two more touchdowns in the final period to run away with the victory.

“This was a great start for our team and new offensive coordinator Moses Ware, and if [senior quarterback] Jared [Johnston] continues to play like he did today, we have a very good chance of being a good team,” BSU head coach Damon Wilson said.

Johnston completed 18 of 35 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns; he also ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Bowie State also saw a strong performance from redshirt junior running back Kendall Jefferson, who rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Redshirt junior running back Keith Brown also ran for a touchdown to go with 50 yards on 13 carries. Bowie State racked up 483 total yards of offense.

Despite giving up 28 points, Bowie State’s defense held Saint Anselm’s offense to only 235 yards.

Bowie State will take on Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) opponent Johnson C. Smith on Sept. 14 in Charlotte, N.C.
