Bowie State University (BSU) lost its first Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) action of the season, in a 29-7 loss to the Saint Augustine Falcons on Sept. 28 at Bulldogs Stadium in Bowie, Md.

The Bulldogs had trouble containing Saint Augustine’s explosive passing offense, and also struggled to score against the Falcons’ defense. Falcons sophomore quarterback A.J Gilford led his team to a 12-0 lead at halftime. The Falcons thereafter went on to score 17 more points in the second half to cap the win. Gilford completed 17-of-23 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 44 yards and sophomore running back Roderick Davenport added 50 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Newt Miller III ran a punt back 40 yards for a touchdown for Saint Augustine in the first quarter.

BSU intercepted Gilford twice, but the Bulldogs weren’t able to generate more than one touchdown on offense all game. Senior quarterback Jared Johnston completed just 16 of 32 passes for 191 yards and an interception.

Bowie fell to a 2-2 overall record, 0-1 in the CIAA; they will face the two-time defending CIAA champion Winston-Salem State on Oct. 5 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
