The Edmondson-Westside Red Storm continued its undefeated season atop the Baltimore City Division I standings after crushing division rival Poly Tech, 41-14, on Sept. 21 at Poly Tech Field in Baltimore.
Edmondson-Westside dominated Poly from the game’s first whistle blow until the last, showcasing their talent as the best so far in Baltimore City.
The Red Storm leapt out to an early lead in the first quarter thanks to senior running back Hakeem Holland, who scored on two touchdown runs to give Edmondson-Westside a 12-0 lead by the midway point of the first quarter.
“I just wanted to put points on the board early in the game,” Holland told the AFRO. “Once we got started, it was hard to stop us.”
Edmondson senior quarterback Tyjuan Eaton took over from that point, tossing a 10-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Quantaye Battle to push the lead to 18-0 at the top of the second quarter.
Poly cut the lead to 18-6 after a short touchdown run by running back Quenton Norfleet midway through the second quarter. But Edmondson responded right back with another touchdown pass from Eaton, this time to junior receiver Jerome Gross, to push the Red Storm lead up to 26-6 at halftime.
Eaton tossed his third touchdown of the game early in the third quarter as he found senior receiver Jaleel Sassafrass, extending Edmondson’s lead to 34-6. Eaton then completed his fourth touchdown pass of the game on another hookup with Battle in the fourth quarter.
Poly scored a second touchdown on a short run by Scott Stephen, but by that point, Edmonson-Westside was far out of their reach.
Edmonson-Westside (4-0 overall) will next face Southwestern High (2-2) on Sept. 28. Poly (2-2) will take on Douglass (2-2 overall) the same day.
After next week, Edmondson-Westside will take on the reigning state champs, Dunbar (2-1) on Oct. 5.
“We’re not going to look that far ahead,” Edmondson-Westside head coach Dante Jones told the AFRO. “Our goal is to win but we’re taking it one game at a time.”
