The Baltimore City College Knights sustained one of their best football seasons in recent history with a victory Nov. 9 in perhaps the most historical rivalry in Baltimore City high school sports.
The City – Poly Tech Engineers rivalry goes back 125 years, with Poly leading the all-time series with a record of 62-wins, 57 losses and 6 draws. But it’s the Knights who will hold the bragging rights this year with a 36-14 win over Poly at M&T Bank Stadium in downtown Baltimore.
The score was tight all the way into the fourth quarter before City began to pour on the points to run away with the lopsided victory. City quarterback Troy Robinson broke an 8-8 tie late in the third quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run, pushing the Knights ahead, 14-8. Robinson scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter and running back Dre-Shawn Winston added another fourth-quarter touchdown score to push the lead to 36-8; Poly scored a late touchdown to set the final score at 36-14.
“All week they said on Twitter how they were better than us,” said Robinson, who was named MVP of the 125th City vs. Poly classic. “We just shut up and talked with our pads…”
City now holds an 8-2 overall record, good enough for second place in the Baltimore City Division I standings and also second place in the 3A East regional standings. Poly falls to a 6-4 overall record.
