WHAT:           During a visit to Washington County today, Comptroller Franchot will present his Maryland Masters Award to three talented students and present the eighth 2015 William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award to a Hagerstown woman.

The Comptroller will honor the following students: Owen Murphy, a third grader at Rockland Woods Elementary School, Hagerstown, for his autumn tree sculpture; Emily Sokol, a sixth grader at East Russell Hicks Middle School, Hagerstown, for a colored pencil drawing of lunchtime; and Hannah Reed, a senior at Clear Spring High School, for a photo of a homeless Hagerstown man. The students’ art will be exhibited in the Comptroller’s Office for two months.

On his next stop, Mr. Franchot will present the eighth 2015 William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award to Loretta Mulcahey, a 40-year volunteer with the Red Cross. At 80 years old, Mrs. Mulcahey of Hagerstown has spent half her life volunteering with the Red Cross at locations on two continents. Her volunteer career began out West in Arizona and included stints in Italy, Germany and the Netherlands before joining the Washington County chapter in 1992. In December, she donated 50 hours to the Caring Hands Gift Wrap event that typically raises $20,000 annually for the Red Cross. In 2008, she received the Beulah T. Meyers Award, the highest honor given to a Red Cross volunteer and was recently named Volunteer of the Month for the Greater Chesapeake Region.
