Franchot to Visit Washington Co. School, College and Promote Shop Maryland Energy
Comptroller to Talk about Tax-Free Weekend Feb. 13-15 at Hagerstown Appliance Store
WHO: Comptroller Peter Franchot
WHAT: Comptroller Franchot will spend today in Washington County, starting with a tour of John Hager Elementary School. In his role as a member of the Board of Public Works (BPW), which oversees school construction funding, the Comptroller will join county School Superintendent Clayton Wilcox and others to see the new school slated to open in August. Named after Hagerstown’s founder, the prekindergarten through Grade 5 school will serve 471 students. The BPW has approved $11.7 million for the balance of the project’s funding.
The Comptroller will then tour Hagerstown Community College’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Building – a five-story, 65,000-square-foot building which houses all the college’s science programs. The tour will be led by college President Dr. Guy Altieri. The Comptroller will meet students studying biotechnology, alternative energy technology and cybersecurity.
In the afternoon, Comptroller Franchot will visit Spichers Appliances, Electronics and Security as part of his annual Shop Maryland Energy tour. From Feb. 13-15, air conditioners, washers and dryers, furnaces, heat pumps, standard-size refrigerators, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), light-emitting diode LED light bulbs, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats meeting or exceeding the applicable ENERGY STAR efficiency requirement will be tax-free.
