Two senior advisers who were serving in an interim capacity have been named to leadership posts at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore by President Juliette B. Bell.
Stephen L. McDaniel
Veteran fund-raiser Stephen L. McDaniel is Bell’s choice for vice president for institutional advancement, the office responsible for generating external funding and community support for university endeavors. McDaniel signed on in the fall of 2013 as a UMES administrator and emerged as the top candidate for the job following a national search.
Patrick R. Liverpool
Bell also has named Patrick R. Liverpool as provost and vice president for academic affairs “so that we can address the critical issues necessary for the academic transformation at the university.” Liverpool joined Bell’s administrative team as an interim appointee this past July.
Since retiring from Delaware State University where he was the business school dean, Liverpool has worked as a higher education consultant, filling senior administrative openings at institutions where searches were taking place. When Bell resigned from Central State University to become UMES president in July 2012, Liverpool temporarily replaced her as the Ohio school’s chief academic policymaker.
McDaniel has three decades of experience working as a collegiate fund-raiser, most recently at Norfolk (Va.) State University. He also spent 18 years with the United Negro College Fund, an organization that coordinates fund-raising for private, historically black institutions.
“Transitions in senior leadership are challenging, but they are not an uncommon phenomenon in higher education,” Bell said. “I see this time of transition as one in which we can identify new leadership to guide us in the next phase of our university’s journey.”
