Van Hollen Announces Winners of the 35th Annual Congressional Art Competition
Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, Westminster, Laurel, Bethesda, New Market, Germantown, North Potomac, Rockville, Potomac & Washington, DC Students Among Those to Win Honors

Rockville, MD – Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen announced the winners of the 35th annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students on March 6, 2016 at Washington ArtWorks in Rockville, MD. At this event, attended by over 300 students, teachers, principals, families, and friends, Congressman Van Hollen honored all the participants and this year’s winner, Alannah Van Horn. Van Horn, a junior at Westminster High School, will have her charcoal self-portrait displayed in the U.S. Capitol beginning in June for one year.
Two hundred and seventy students from 29 schools within the Eighth Congressional District participated in the competition. Congressman Van Hollen presented certificates of participation to each student who submitted artwork. Jurors selected 90 entries to include in the exhibition that was on display at Washington ArtWorks through March 20, 2016. From these 90 entries, 16 student works were selected for special recognition.  Additional details on the students who were recognized are below.

First Place:
The winner’s artwork will be on display in the United States Capitol beginning in June for one year and will join winning entries from every congressional district in the country. The first place was awarded to:

The Jane E. Lawton Memorial Award:
This award honors the late Delegate Lawton for her exceptional service, undeniable exuberance, and devotion to the arts. This award is for singular vision or unique use of materials, reflecting Delegate Lawton’s individuality and vitality. This piece will hang in Congressman Van Hollen’s Rockville office for one year. The Jane E. Lawton Memorial was awarded to:

Washington ArtWorks Award:
The Washington ArtWorks Award is awarded to the student artist who best exemplifies a mastery of technique and form. The artwork displays maturity both in concept and execution that is beyond their years and promotes artistic excellence going forward. The Washington ArtWorks Award was awarded to:

Washington School of Photography Award:
The Best of Photography Award is given to the student that best demonstrates an understanding of photographic principles. Their use of composition and lighting goes beyond the basic ideas of imagery, but also conveys a story or feeling to the audience. The Washington School of Photography Award was awarded to:
