Van Hollen Statement on 50th Anniversary of Voting Rights Act

Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement marking the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act being signed into law:
“The Voting Rights Act has been a cornerstone to ensuring that all citizens are able to participate in our democracy. It removed intentional, structural roadblocks that prevented African Americans and other minorities from exercising their right to vote. But today, the right to vote is still under assault and we must recognize that the fight for equal voting rights is as important today as it was 50 years ago. Every potential vote prevented from being cast is a blight on our democracy, and we should not rest until we’ve removed all obstacles to voting.”
